…when something beautiful is destroyed?

Mosaic in Herculaneum

Why do we care?

Why does it matter to us when a building we’ve never visited burns?

Why does it hurt to see masterpieces disappear?

Why do we even create them in the first place?

Perhaps, creating makes us feel more real. By making beauty we improve our lives. It doesn’t need to be monumental. It just needs to be.

And today, the world is mourning the near-total destruction of one of the most beautiful buildings ever created – Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. While plans are already being made to rebuild it, will it be the same? Does it matter if it is the same? Or does it just need to be beautiful?
